At the Beach, 1930s

Found photo

Since summer has officially arrived, it’s time to take a look at older women in the swim. Are these two women wearing skirted bathing suits?  Or do they have on short play dresses, designed for fun and sun but not for swimming?  Given the loose fit of the bodices, I’m guessing the latter.  Both options existed in the 1930s, when I think this photo was taken.  The skirted suits—called dressmaker suits–were popular with the older set.  That most likely would be the preferred choice for the older woman on the left.

The older woman certainly looks comfortable with her spotted kerchief, sunglasses, and loose fitting attire.  Is she related to the glamorous young woman next to her?  Their noses look similar, and so do their shapely legs.

Whatever they are, they are designed for fun! And that’s the whole point of the beach holiday. It’s great seeing an older woman in sports attire,

I think a “shelf bra” in the older woman’s suit might have made it more comfortable.
