Although I wonder if the famous American fashion designer Bonnie Cashin really did use a Kenmore sewing machine, I think this is a wonderful way to attract home sewers to the Sears brand. Cashin made her mark on American design by embracing sportswear made from unusual fabric combinations, often with off beat, striking closures. She was also the force behind the classic Coach handbags. As she is quoted in the ad, “I collect fabrics from all over the world. I’m always experimenting–with knits–leathers– suedes– nubby tweeds.” You can read more about her here.
If this photo was taken when it was published in 1973, Cashin was a very young looking sixty-five. She is dressed in separates with her blue shirt open pretty far down! (It might also be a blue shirtwaist style dress with a red skirt wrapped over it.) Take a close look at the buckle on her skirt, a typical Cashin closure.
I don’t know about you, but those beautiful fabrics in the background really make me want to sew.
I’m actually wondering if she is wearing a dress–the front pleat on the skirt has the same blue as her blouse peaking out.
Wow, 65! I hope I look that good then.
I think it is a sweater dress, with a leather over-skirt. She looks fabulous!
